PROJECT TITLE: FLOOD RESPONSE - WASH [Water Sanitisation Health]

Response International delivers a major emergency relief project for the Punjab and Sindh

WASH [water, sanitation & hygiene] project addresses the urgent need for sanitation facilities for survivors of the monsoon related floods that hit Pakistan in July and August 2010.  Key among these are: hygiene kits for women and the provision of clean water for the disabled and those suffering from HIV/AIDS.  WASH enables survivors to maintain their cultural practices, pride and privacy by delivering mobile water tankers directly to their home. Culturally, women bear the burden of carrying and using water. WASH addresses this by ensuring that women make up a strong component of the project.

The installation of hand pumps, construction of latrines, a solid waste disposal service and health awareness campaigns are on-going activities.  Life preserving prevention and treatment for diarrhoea and water borne diseases are a key component of the project. For our WASH to deliver effectively, Response International’s target was to raise £2 million; we have raised and spent to date just over £1.7 million. .
