We are engrossed in the field and focus much of our energy on delivering service. We do not pay salaries to fundraisers, press officers or PR companies but retain only staff relevant to our sector: victim assistance/landmine actions. All of our more eminent professionals are unpaid volunteers. We have very few frills. Our projects are well funded by the major donors; however, all funds are granted according to a detailed contract. This has taught us to operate our administration within slim margins. General funds are hard to come by, as most governmental and institutional donors need to assume ownership of a specific action. At this time our grants are frequently of the order of 250-1,000,000 US$. This effectively recognises the technical proficiency of our interventions and serves to establish our professional credentials. HMD needs your ongoing support - every tiny effort makes a difference. Can you, your friends, your company or anyone else that you know help organise an event once a year? Please email hmd@hmdresponse.org.uk or call us on 020 7229 7447 if you would like to volunteer to organise a social or challenge fundraising events. ANNUAL EID DINNER AND AUCTION [Event Raised: £12,000]
Mumtaz Restaurant, 4-10 Park Road, London NW1
Such an achievement has only been possible through the continued support and effort by organisations, voluntary workers, and above all, the generosity of individual donors. All funds from the evening will go towards Landmine Action and Health projects in Balouchistan and the Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Guest speakers: Lord N Ahmed, Andrew Morton - the authorised biographer of Princess Diana HADRIAN’S HURDLE - Are you up for the ultimate challenge? [Event Raised: £8,000] First there was the London Marathon and the Great North Run. Now, get ready for the ultimate challenge: Hadrian’s Wall. The goal: to help raise funds for Response International and to have fun in the process. Response International is a well respected British-based charity working for victims of conflict; operating since 1993. You will be joining Harry Douglas, an enthusiastic supporter of Response International, and other members of the H.A.C (Honourable Artillery Company) as they participate in “Hadrian’s Hurdle” over two days in August 2003. They are a group of approximately twenty volunteers who regularly help out the local community. Now they will run the 83 mile wall and hope that others will share in the challenge. This is truly a marathon where the attitude is ‘the more the merrier’. BE WARNED: THE COMPLETE RUN IS AN EVENT FOR THE VERY FIT! HOWEVER, EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE FUN AND, AT THE SAME TIME, HELP OUT A GREAT CAUSE! The event will take place on the 23rd – 24th August and is held over a weekend. The run will cover 50 miles on Saturday starting at Bowness on Solway in Cumbria and finishing in Newcastle upon Tyne on Sunday. It all ends with a party on the Quayside. You may click here for a detailed map of the race. The Great Wall of China may be visible from space, the Marathon des Sables may be run in 100 degree heat but neither can be seen from the B6316 - and neither is on your doorstep! If you are interested in running one or both days of the marathon, running as one day relay, sponsoring a runner, or helping at the event please contact us at hadrians_hurdle@hotmail.com and we will reply as soon as we can. MID SUMMER BOOGIE - Let's all dance the night away [Event Raised: £12,000]

Due to the overwhelming success of the Quiz Night, this should be another event not to be missed. Please don’t delay and order your ticket today (Click here to view flyer). Nail-Biting finish to Notting Hill quiz evening [Event Raised: £12,000]
Amongst local celebrities attending were Harry Enfield, authors Yung Chang, Debbie Moggach, Jono Keats, Elisa Segrave, TV presenter Annika Rice and Andrew Morton (a trustee of R.I.), TV producer John Lloyd and the evening was hosted by 'I'm Sorry I haven't a clue' star Tim Brook Taylor. They competed in the quiz and also listened to a short talk on landmines by R.I. volunteer Lt.Col. Jane Davis. Huge support was received from local shops and businesses, whose generosity ensured that all funds raised went directly to the charity. 'We have been overwhelmed by the kindness of shops and businesses in Notting Hill and Holland Park,' said R.I. director Philip Garvin. ' Thanks to them we will be able to send over £15,000 directly to help victims of conflict.' Last but not least, here is an E-mail sent on the night of the quiz by our Orthopaedic surgeon John Beavis from the Afghanistan/Pakistan Border. USEFUL LINKS :: Guest List and Pictures The Great North Run on Tyneside on 6th October 2002 [Event Raised: £4,500] Dear Members and Supporters, Although our name has, this year, changed slightly (formerly HMD Response), our philosophy regarding the provision of support for victims of conflict throughout the world remains exactly the same. We are currently providing medical, nursing and psychosocial support for some exceptionally vulnerable refugees in Bosnia and for some very deprived communities in the south of Lebanon, including victims of torture; water and sanitation support is being provided for Palestinian refugees within camps throughout Lebanon, with plans for the reconstruction and equipping of badly needed health centres; we are implementing an emergency mine clearance project along the Pakistan/Afghan border, with plans for an expanded programme of mine awareness education and physical/ psychosocial rehabilitation for the survivors of mine injuries. We are asking for your support in these activities once again. Our Medical Coordinator, Dr Andrew Ferguson, is participating in the Great North Run on Tyneside on 6th October 2002. In his annual reaffirmation of life he will attempt to cajole his limbs into completing the thirteen miles, and is asking for sponsorship to encourage him on his way. Please consider making a donation, to download ‘tax effective giving’ application forms for British, USA and other. please click here Many, many thanks for your continuing support. Climbing to the Roof of Africa Challenge by Mark Wheeler - New Year 2002 for Response International [Event Raised: £2,500] The white helmeted snow peak of Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania looked so enticing from photographs that I wondered why I had not thought of climbing it before. Height and effort! At 5,895 metres to its summit of Uhuru, Kilimanjaro is the tallest peak in Africa. In a relatively small space, there are few other places offering such vast differences in vegetation, varying from rainforest, moorland through to alpine deserts. Stunning sights await you, such as the dawn sun rising above the tablecloth of cloud below and magnificent panoramas when the mists evaporate. "No gain without pain," I had heard. Walking 8 hours per day or more (16 on the final ascent) is not everyone's idea of chilling out (except perhaps for the temperatures at the summit, -10 C). Accommodation is available but in very basic hut/shelters (which are nonetheless very welcome in bad weather). You do not have to be a professional mountaineer, however, hiring a local
guide is not only a good idea but also compulsory. Obviously, you need
to be reasonably fit and training in advance helps, but not with altitude
sickness! For me motivation was essential and the fact that I was raising
sponsorship money for Response International meant that there was no allowing
myself easy excuses to stop (ranging from sore feet to exhaustion, breathlessness
and nausea). However, the exhilarating experience and sense achievement
from vomiting immediately below a sign which read, "Congratulations
you are now at Uhuru Peak, Tanzania, 5895m AMSL" is something I shall
never forget! |
