We are engrossed in the field and focus much of our energy on delivering service. We do not pay salaries to fundraisers, press officers or PR companies but retain only staff relevant to our sector: victim assistance/ landmine actions. All of our more eminent professionals are unpaid volunteers. We have very few frills. Our projects are well funded by the major donors; however, all funds are granted according to a detailed contract. This has taught us to operate our administration within slim margins. General funds are hard to come by, as most governmental and institutional donors need to assume ownership of a specific action. At this time our grants are frequently of the order of 250- 1,000,000 US$. This effectively recognises the technical proficiency of our interventions and serves to establish our professional credentials. The above carries with it a burden: the percentage allowed is too narrow a margin to easily maintain our already restrained organisational costs. In fact it is very difficult to maintain sufficient general funds with which to initiate interventions according to our own priorities. We rely on independent givers to provide for our reserve humanitarian funds; thereby gaining for ourselves the ability to respond to unfashionable or forgotten causes; to meet humanitarian rather than narrow political priorities.
